In this tutorial I will be showing you how to change your DNS (Domain Name Server) settings in Namecheap.
It is important that you know how to do this if you purchased your domain name from Namecheap.com but plan to host your website elsewhere.
Don’t worry, it’s not a very difficult process!
Changing Your DNS Settings With Namecheap
Before we start: To complete this process, you will need to know the DNS address of the hosting service you are going to use. This should be given to you by your hosting provider and will look something like this:
- dns1.websitename.com
- dns2.websitename.com
Step 1: Sign in to your Namecheap account. Once you are signed in, you should be taken to your Home Page.
Step 2: Go to “Your Domains”. To do this, simply hover your mouse over the tab that says (A) “Hi ‘Your Username’” on the top left of your screen and then select (B) “Manage Domains”.
Step 3: Select your domain name. Click the domain name whose DNS settings you want to change from the (C) list in the center of your screen.
Step 4: Go to Domain Name Server Setup. One the left hand menu click on (D) “Domain Name Server Setup”.
Step 5: Enter in your custom DNS server address. To do this you must first click the (E) radio button labeled “Specify Custom DNS Servers”.
Now you can enter the custom DNS server addresses from your other hosting provider in the (F) blank spaces starting in line 1. Remember, you need to have these given to you by your hosting provider. Most hosting providers have two DNS server addresses so don’t be worried if you can’t fill up all the lines.
Step 6: Save changes. This is the last step! All you need to do now is click on (G) “Save Changes” at the bottom of the screen.
You Have Successfully Switched Your DNS!
That’s it! It’s easy enough, right? Please keep in mind that this is simply pointing your domain name in the right direction. Depending on your hosting provider, there still may be more steps you need to take on their end before you have a functional website.
