One of the most important aspect of many websites is the blog post. The blog post is different from a website page for a variety of reasons. Most importantly posts make up a majority of content on most websites. This is because they are easy to create and allow for a website to be constantly updated and changing as time passes.
Before you can take advantage of posts on your website you must be able to understand the basic components of posts and how to create them. This posts aims to show you how to make a new WordPress blog post in 11 simple steps by following the creation of this very post!
1. Choose An Idea/Topic To Write About
Choosing a topic to write about may seem like an obvious step. However, many times this is the most difficult step as it requires you to be creative and many times to think outside of the box. Ideally the topic you choose to write about should related to the overall theme/niche of your website.
2. Write Content
Once you have an idea of what you want to write about you must now actually write the content. There are a few different methods to do this. I prefer to write my content in a Google Doc before I actually create the post in the WordPress (Step 3) as I feel there are less distractions than working in the Admin Area of your blog. You could also choose to write your content in Microsoft Word or OpenOffice.
Remember that your content should be organized in a manner that allows your readers to easily understand the progression of your post. It usually helps to create an outline of what you’re going to talk about and to include many headings and breaks in the writing (Step 6).
3. Create New Post
Now that you have your content it is time to create the actual post. To do this you must first go to the Admin Dashboard (1) of your blog. Next hold your mouse over “Posts” (2) on the left hand column and select “Add New” (3). Once you click on “Add New” you should be taken to a new page titled “Add New Post”. Now it is time for Step 4.
4. Enter Post Title
You are now in the post creation area. The first thing you need to do is give your post a title. To do this you must place your cursor in the first text box on the page containing the text “Enter title here” (1). Now you simply enter the title into that box. For this post I will be entering the title of “How To Make A New Blog Post In 12 Simple Steps”.
Remember that a blog post title should be short and simple but also must clearly state what the post is about.
5. Enter Content
With the title created it is now time to enter your content into the post. If you have not already written the content you can now type it all in the large text box (1) just under where you entered the post title. If you have already written your content in another program you can simply copy and paste the post from there into the box.
6. Format Content
Even if you have just written the most beautifully elegant post of your life it will not be read if it looks ugly and hard to follow. If you actually want people to read your post it is very important that you spend a good amount of time formatting your content.
Most formatting can be done by simply using the options in the toolbar directly above where you have entered your content (1). You can edit your text by bolding or italicizing it. You can add bullet points, create lists, align your text to the left, right, or center, create hyperlinks, add quotations, etc.
If you want even more advanced options you can click on the button called “Show/Hide Kitchen Sink” (2 above). Most importantly this will give you access to heading tags and a few more formatting options (3). I would suggest just spend some time playing around with all of these options to get a feel for what they do and how they affect the look of your post.
7. Add Images
Everybody likes looking at pictures and most people don’t like reading giant blocks of text. Because of this it is usually a very good idea to add some relevant images to your post. The first step of adding an image to your post is to click on the “Add Media” (1) button directly above the formatting toolbar and below the title box.
After you click on the “Add Media” button a new box will pop up with some options. If you already have the desired image in your media library you can simply select an image and click “insert into post” (2) in the bottom right.
If you have not yet uploaded the image you can simply click on “Upload Files” (3 above) then “Select Files” (4).
Then you must locate the image you want to upload and click “Open” (5). Once you have done this you will be taken back to the “Media Library” where you can select your image and click “Insert into post”.
8. Assign Categories And Tags
Both categories and tags allow visitors to your site to easily find the posts they are interested in reading. Because of this it is critical that you assign your post to relevant categories and give them appropriate tags.
To assign your post to categories is done in the “Categories” box (1) usually located on the right of the add new post page. Here you can assign your post to an already existing category by simply checking the boxes next to the shown categories (2) or you can click “+Add New Category” (3) to create a new category.
Tags can be added in the box entitle “Tags” box (4) that is usually located directly beneath the “Categories” box. Here you can either type in the tags you would like to use separated by commas (5) or you can click on “Choose from the most used tags” (6) to see what tags are frequently used on your site.
9. Select A Featured Image
A featured image is an image that will represent the post in other places throughout your website. It is important that you choose a featured image for every post in order to keep your site looking nice and complete.
Setting a featured image is done in the “Featured Image” (1) box usually located directly beneath the “Tags” box. To set an image you simply click on “Set featured image” (2) and then follow all of the same steps as uploading an image (step 7).
10. Preview Post
It is important to preview your post before publishing it. To do this simply click on the “Preview” (1) button on the top right of the Add New Post page. This will open up a new tab and allow you to see exactly what the final version of your post will look like. You should go through it and look for any changes that need to be made then go back and make those changes.
11. Publish Post
The final step is to publish your post for all to see! Once you are satisfied with your post you can publish it by clicking the “Publish” button (1). Once you push publish your post is live and visible to anyone on your website. Remember that you can always go back and change or edit any aspect of your post at anytime, even after you have published it.
