If you’re new to WordPress you may be wondering exactly what users are. If you are looking for an in-depth look at user roles, please check out my previous post: WordPress User Roles Explained – What Are They And Why Are They Important.
In summary a user role gives certain privileges and various levels of access to your site depending on your role. As an administrator, you are able to determine which users have which roles so that you can have ultimate control over your site. The six roles from the least privileged to most privileged are:
- Super Administrator (Only exists within multi-site networks)
Adding New Users Manually
Adding new users is quite a simple process. There are actually two methods of doing so: 1. subscribing new users yourself or 2. allowing visitors to your site to subscribe themselves to your site.
Having the control of choosing who subscribes to your site is generally the preferred and more controlled method. This is the method we will be looking at in this post today.
Adding a new user can be done in 8 simple steps:
Step 1: Log into your WordPress Dashboard.
Step 2: Hover your mouse over (A) “Users” in the left hand menu and move your mouse over and click on (B) “Add New”.
Step 3: Fill in the relevant information on this screen: (C) Username, (D), Email, (E) First Name, (F) Last Name, (G) Website, (H) Password, and (J) Repeat Password. Note that the italicized fields are required and must be filled in in order to continue. (See image below step 6)
Step 4: Decide if you want the password to be sent to the new user by email. If you do, check the (K) box next to “Send Password?”. It is probably more secure to send the password privately using another method, but the subscriber can change their password at any time in the future once they log in. (See image below step 6)
Step 5: Select the user's “Role” from the (L) drop down menu at the bottom of the page. Remember I have another post explaining each role in detail. (See image below step 6)
Step 6: Click on (M) “Add New User”.
Step 7: Wait. At this point you are done and must simply wait for your new user to accept the invitation they will soon receive in their email.
Step 8: Your invitee will receive an email looking similar to the one below and must confirm their registration by clicking on the (N) link which will take them to a WordPress sign in screen. Here they must enter the (O) username and (P) password from the email.
Bonus: While you are waiting you can click on (R) “Users” on the left hand menu to monitor all of your users existing and new users. You can change and edit their user information as well as their user roles.
DONE! It's as easy as that! Now you can add as many users as you want to your site. Just make sure you grant them appropriate user roles based on how much responsibility you want them to have within your site.
