KM Mindset Shift Course – Lesson 11 – When You Feel Like Giving Up

This is the eleventh and final lesson of the Kirby's Marketing Mindset Shift Course! I truly hope that it has been a good and helpful experience for you.

By now you should be well on your way to creating your first successful online business with a proper and healthy mindset (assuming you've taken advantage of the amazing communities and resources I've recommended). A mindset for success and longevity, rather than quick and easy money.

Even with this mindset, there will probably be numerous occasions when you feel defeated and like you just would rather give up than keep pushing forward. This is completely normal and has happened to me more times than I can count.

The reality is, this business takes time and dedication in a world and environment that is constantly changing and adapting to the latest technologies, preferences, and desires of your audiences. All of this, plus the realization that this business isn't as glamorous as it may have seemed at first, struggling with writer's block or other technical problems, and whatever else you got going on, are all working together to make you feel like dropping out of this business altogether!

The goal is not to quit, but to use your feelings of defeat as motivating moments that can propel you into the next stage of your business! How can you do this? Well, here are 5 things I like to do when I'm feeling this way.

1. Seek out support and encouragement

When things are getting rough, many times all we need is a reassuring comment or some positive encouragement. You can get this from your friends, family, online communities, and groups (Wealthy Affiliate University is where I go for support when I'm feeling stuck).

Often times we get so bogged down in our business that we fail to see just how well we're doing and need someone to remind us of that.

2. Seek out feedback and positive criticism

Just as we sometimes fail to see how good our work is, we can also get so bogged down that we fail to see some obvious problems or weaknesses within our work. This is where some positive criticism may be just what we need to inspire us to push forward. Positive criticism can open our eyes to new ideas that we wouldn't have been able to come up with ourselves and, ultimately, keep us building in an upward trajectory!

3. Reevaluate your vision and goals

In the beginning lessons of this course, I had you write down your overall vision and break that down into long-term and short-term goals. When you're first starting out, as you were when you completed those action steps, it's easy to set challenging goals. Once you've been working toward those goals for months, you may begin to realize you've been a little too ambitious…or maybe they're just completely unattainable now that you've been in the business for a while and have a better understanding of its demands. Either way, not being able to reach them can be a huge demoralizer…believe me, I know!

If this is the case and you're feeling demotivated or like you're failing because you haven't been able to reach your goals or complete your vision, maybe it's time to take a step back and re-evaluate your initial vision and goals.

4. Take a break

Burnout is also another big reason why people end up giving up on their dreams of a successful online business. If you're giving it 110% all day, every day, it's inevitable that you'll start to get burned out at one point or another. If this is you, take a break!

Maybe it's just a day, a couple days, a week, or a few weeks. Whatever it is, step away from what you're doing and take a break. Set a specific amount of time you'll be away from your work and ACTUALLY stay away from it. Do something else you enjoy.

If you can do this, you'll come back after your rest more motivated and ready to go than ever!

Ultimately, no matter how much you feel like doing it, don't give up. As I've said in previous lessons, I've seen so many people who have started an online business and given up before they even gave it a fair chance. If only they had given it another month or two, their life would've been changed forever, but, because they chose not to remain dedicated to the proven process, they quit.

Heck, I was about to give up if it hadn't been for the wise words of one of my mentors who told me I was about to reach my “breaking point”…the point where I would finally begin to get some traction in the search engines, traffic to my site, and start making sales. A few weeks after he told me that, I got my first sale and haven't looked back since. Just think if I would've quit and left my business to die.

Action Steps

Today's action steps are simple.

  1. Write down the five steps above and put them in an easy to find location. If you ever feel like quitting or giving up, pull them out and do one of them.
  2. Revisit the discussion page Lesson 3 Setting Goals For Success, where you introduced your visions and goals and give a piece of advice to all of the newcomers.
