In today's lesson, we are going to talk about failure! (I know…exciting right?!?)
Let's be real, most people who get into internet marketing end up failing in one way or another. Failing looks different to different people. Some recover from their failures and come back stronger with more success, but most simply give up and run far, far away.
So…what exactly does failure look like in the world of online business and internet marketing? Does it look like not getting the “instant money” you were promised when you fell for that “guru's” lies? Does it look like not getting to quit your job, buy your dream home and car, and move to the Bahamas within a few months of starting your first online business?
No, each and every one of those things I mentioned are not failures in my book. Those things failing to happen cause you to realize that starting your own online business isn't as easy and effortless as many of those “gurus” try to convince you it is.
In fact, in many cases, they don't want you to achieve what they promised because they're hoping you'll keep coming back and buying their fraudulent products as you continue to chase the dream lifestyle they are shoving in your face!
To me, failure in the online business world is this: quitting after three months (or any amount of time) because you've gotten tired of working hard with no results, or after not making a single dollar after six months, or struggling to get ranked well for any good keywords despite writing awesome and informative content.
To turn my definition of failure around, it means that success looks like pushing through those first months of very little progress despite hours of work, day-after-day. Success means looking past the first six months of no income to the days where all your hard work and investment will pay off!
So, what's the problem here?
The problem is a great majority of people who start looking to make money online expect all of those crazy, unrealistic things to happen in a matter of days with only a few clicks and a few words typed. When they don't happen as quickly as they expected or would've liked and/or that it takes much more time and effort on their part than they originally thought, they lose faith in the process and give up.
The really sad thing about this all is a lot of people give up just before their “breakthrough moment”. In fact, this was me!
After nearly four months of working on Kirby's Marketing.com for 4 hours a day or more, I wasn't getting any traffic or sales. Basically, it felt like I had been putting in all this effort for naught. In a last ditch effort, I reached out to Kyle (one of the founders of Wealthy Affiliate University, which is where I was learning how to build my online business) and asked him if he could have a look at my site and give me some advice on what I could/should be doing differently because what I was doing now wasn't working and seemed pointless.
Guess what he told me!?! He told me my site was great and to just keep doing exactly what I had already been doing. He said I was doing all the right things and building my business on a firm foundation. Because of this, I was really close to my own “breakthrough moment” where all my effort would finally begin to pay off!
I'll admit, I was a bit skeptical, but I decided to take him at his word and keep pushing forward. Lo-and-behold, one month later I started getting rankings in Google, consistent traffic to my site, and SALES!!! I cringe to think what would've happened had I given in to my desires to quit and give up and not kept pushing forward.
You know, it usually takes 3-6 months before a website will begin to get any organic traffic from Google and other search engines, then another 2-3 months until that traffic becomes steady and sufficient enough to create steady, significant income. That's a total of 6-9 months before you can expect to be earning any sort of real income from your online business.
Remember how most people give up within the first 3 months? Don't be one of those people…otherwise you'll just be another internet marketing failure…
So, to sum it all up, the biggest mistake I see people make is simply quitting. If you give up and quit, you will fail and you'll never find any sort of success online. Either you'll give up altogether, or you'll keep jumping from program to program. Whether the program is legit or not, if you quit, you will fail.
The truth is, I've already introduced you to two excellent resources, communities, and training platforms that are more than capable of teaching you to create your own successful online business. It's up to you to take advantage of those resources, manage your expectations, and make constant and diligent forward progress. If you do these things, I am confident you will find success online and not become just another online business failure.
- Think about what could possibly make you quit once you've gotten started. What negative feelings and/or thoughts are you susceptible to? What supports and/or resources would be best to help you overcome these potential roadblocks to your success? How can I help you to not fail, but succeed?
- Consider the previous questions and share them on this lesson's discussion page! I look forward to seeing how I can help you get past your failures and find success online. Also, be sure to participate in the discussion and comment on a few others' responses as well.
Until the next lesson!
